Basement Finishing
One of the most cost effective ways to gain more living space is by finishing your basement.
Whether you’re dreaming of a home gym, a guest suite, a playroom, or a full additional level of living space, finishing your basement can dramatically expand your home’s usable square footage—without the high cost of building up or out.
We’ve transformed basements into everything from single-purpose rooms to fully finished lower levels. Whatever your vision, we’re ready to help you bring it to life. Let’s talk about what you have in mind.
If you dream it, we can create it!

What to Expect
Our finished basement projects typically start around $75,000 and go up from there. This includes full foundation-in finishing: insulation, framing, electrical, plumbing (if needed), drywall, flooring, ceilings, trim, doors, paint, and all other components defined in the plan.
Keep in mind: finishing a basement involves the same trades, materials, and craftsmanship as building an addition—just without the exterior shell and foundation. So, it makes sense that the cost is similar to the interior portion of any high-quality addition.
Smaller spaces, single-room conversions, or remodeling an already finished basement may fall below this threshold.
Adding a wet space—such as a bathroom or kitchenette—adds $50,000 and up, depending on layout and finishes (cabinets, tile, half bath vs. full bath, etc.).
Including a bedroom in a finished basement has its own set of life safety codes that must be followed and must be carefully taken into account in the design and layout of the finished space. We will discuss how this may or may not affect the final budget and overall feasibility of the project.
Important Considerations
If your basement is not currently classified as finished by your town’s assessor, then any work must comply with current building codes.
One of the most critical requirements is “egress”; Finished basements must have two legal means of escape in the event of an emergency:
- One is typically the interior staircase leading to the main floor.
- The second must be either:
- A door leading directly outside and not through a garage (common in walk-out basements), or…
- A code-compliant egress window and window well—large enough, low enough, and fully accessible for emergency exit.
Important: Many basement windows do not qualify, especially small upper windows or those that open into deep window wells—unless they are purpose-built for egress. In some towns, even a bulkhead is not accepted as a second means of escape due to the risk of snow accumulation making it unusable in winter.
If your current layout doesn’t meet code, installing a proper second means of escape will need to be factored into the project’s scope and cost.
However, if your basement is already recorded as finished, it may be considered a remodel rather than new construction. This can sometimes offer more flexibility with code requirements. In every case, we’ll consult with your local building inspector to determine the appropriate path forward.
FAQs
How long does a basement finishing project typically take?
Most basement projects take 8 to 12 weeks, depending on size, complexity, and whether a bathroom or kitchen is included.
Can you add a bathroom or kitchenette to my basement?
Absolutely. Adding a wet space like a bathroom or kitchenette is common, though it does increase cost and complexity. We’ll review plumbing access and layout options during the planning phase.
Do I need a permit to finish my basement?
Yes. Like any major renovation, finishing a basement requires permits. We handle all permitting and inspections to ensure your project is fully up to code.
Is it possible to remodel a basement that’s already been finished?
Yes, and we do this often. Whether it’s outdated finishes, poor layout, or issues with moisture, we can redesign and rebuild your space to modern standards.
What about moisture or waterproofing?
We always assess your basement for signs of water infiltration or moisture before we begin. If necessary, we can address drainage, vapor barriers, and other preventative measures to ensure a dry, comfortable living space.
Our Portfolio
For the Grandkids
Our clients, a lovely retired couple, wanted to utilize about half of their large basement for more finished space. Their local extended family frequently came to visit and this would provide a comfortable place for them all to congregate, relax and the grandkids could have a place to play.
This higher-end project included adding a FULL bath with one-piece tub/shower, tiled floor, and custom cabinetry and plumbing fixtures. The entire living envelope was properly insulated and efficient, thermostatically-controlled, wall-mount electric heat was added. The vinyl plank flooring will provide durability and years of maintenance-free worry. We also opened up the stairwell and converted the utilitarian stairs to beautiful, custom-stained oak.
Part of this project also included building a large cedar-lined closet for seasonal storage as well as a plywood wall at the workout area to provide electric supply and a place for hanging storage.
Our clients were a true joy to work with and they were over-the-moon happy with the results. The photos speak for themselves.
